Letter about STANDD: First Assembly of God’s youth ministry Faith and Fire is organizing a rally for drug awareness and fundraising for drug rehabilitation called STANDD. The acronym is for Standing Together Against the Needless Devastation of Drugs with the mission of “It’s time for Laurens County to take a stand.” This will be an event to unite all churches, businesses, and law enforcement that are willing to be a part of taking a stand to improve our community as well as to raise funds for scholarships for Laurens County residents to Teen Challenge, a drug rehabilitation facility. The Teen Challenge Program was developed out of a need to bring the gospel to the streets of New York City in the late 1950's by Reverend David Wilkerson. His work on the streets brought him face to face with a devastating drug problem he felt had to be addressed. His willingness to go where others would not and his determination to follow God's call raised up a worldwide organization that serves in 92 countries with over 600 hundred facilities. The miracle of Teen Challenge is a story that offers real hope for the addicted. You may have read the book or watched the movie “The Cross and the Switchblade”, the story of one of those addicts saved from a life destroyed by drugs. Teen Challenge of South Carolina is a non-residential crisis referral center. They are now located between Conway and Georgetown on Highway 701 approximately half way between both of those cities in the community of Yauannah, SC. The cost of a scholarship is $750 dollars and we want to provide scholarships to drug addicted individuals of all ages in Laurens County. Working with the local law enforcement to receive referrals to place these individuals in the program and then providing a framework of churches and other community organizations to help the families who suffer from their loved one’s addiction. The event or “rally” will consist of various entertainment and performances while including testimonials and information regarding the drug problem in Laurens County.
